"My work thrives in the space where tradition and experimentation meet—I want each surface to carry both memory and reinvention."
Through his experimental visual language, Rathod challenges the ideas of form and technique.
Gautam Rathod (b. 1995) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting and printmaking. His early academic years were marked by active engagement in printmaking workshops and art camps organized by Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi and SGVP. These formative experiences exposed him to a wide range of traditional and experimental processes, shaping his long-standing interest in pushing the limits of medium and surface. During his post-diploma training, Rathod developed a sustained focus on woodcut and serigraphy, both of which remain integral to his practice today. By blending painting and printmaking into a unified visual language, he transforms the matrix of the print into a ground for layered, mixed-media expression. This experimental approach allows him to challenge conventions of both form and technique while maintaining a strong grounding in materiality. In his recent work, Rathod has turned his attention to contemporary spaces of grooming such as salons, its tools and products– treating them as sites of performance, beauty, and self-fashioning. Through this inquiry, he expands his practice beyond representation, probing the cultural aesthetics of everyday life.
Rathod holds a Diploma in Painting from Sheth C.N. College of Fine Arts, Ahmedabad (2015–2020) and a Post-Diploma in Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda (2020–2022). His work has been exhibited widely, with notable group exhibitions including Pahaat (Fine Arts Gallery, Baroda, 2022), Breaking the Mould (Anant Art Gallery, Delhi, 2022), The Baroda March (Rukshaan Art, 2023 & 2025), and Anthology on the Annexe (Amdavad ni Gufa, 2025).
