"I try to create my work as simple as all viewers can relate it with their own feelings. The drama of a human life, and particular individuals, takes the centre stage of my work, surrounded by key objects that together provide glimpses of everyday life."
By weaving together figuration and objecthood, Deo builds visual narratives that are both intimate and universal.
Jayshree Singh Deo’s (b. 1997) practice explores human emotions and the subtle interrelations between inner feelings and external realities. Drawing from personal experience and observation, she creates moody depictions of the everyday, where human figures and body parts intersect with ordinary objects. These objects when collected, photographed, and reinterpreted, become carriers of emotion and memory, opening dialogues between lived experience and collective reflection. By weaving together figuration and objecthood, Deo builds visual narratives that are both intimate and universal, inviting audiences to recognize fragments of their own lives within her work.
Her engagement with printmaking is rooted in the material and conceptual potential of the medium. The processes of layering, repetition, and experimentation allow her to translate emotional states into tactile compositions. Through this, she cultivates a practice that is sensitive, participatory, and deeply invested in connecting with viewers.
Born in Manoharpur, Jharkhand, in 1997, Deo completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts in Printmaking from Bibhuti Kanungo College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar (2015–2019) and her Master of Fine Arts in Graphics at Indira Kala Sangit Viswavidyalay, Khairagarh (2021–2023). She has received the Young Artist Scholarship (2021–22) from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and has been awarded the 1st National Ambedkar Foundation Award (2022), the Covid Relief Fund Prize from the Manorama Young Printmaker Award (2021) and awarded for Excellence in Printmaking from B.K. College of Art and Crafts (2016). In recent years, her works have been shown at Vihangam (Sutara Art Studio, Ranchi, 2025), the Annual Women Artists Contemporary Art Exhibition (Artscapes, Chandigarh, 2025), Nabh Sparsh: Indian Women Printmakers Exhibition (National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, 2024), Imprinting Justice (International Print Exchange Programme India, 2024), and The Bombay Art Society’s 131st Annual Art Exhibition (Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai 2023). She has also participated in the Fourth International Print Biennale (Yerevan, Armenia, 2023) and the 31st Ravi Jain Memorial Foundation Exhibition (Dhoomimal Gallery, New Delhi, 2022).
