In his new series of watercolours, Vivek VC draws on the tales told by his grandmother, weaving them together with motifs borrowed from Mughal and Persian miniatures. Figures and animals move through his compositions as if half-remembered, their presence more suggestive than explanatory, creating fragmented storylines that remain deliberately unresolved. The use of a pared-down colour palette intensifies this effect, evoking a dreamlike atmosphere where clarity gives way to uncertainty, and memory slips into imagination. This tension reflects the larger arc of Vivek’s practice, which consistently lingers on the spaces between order and chaos, reality and recollection. While grounded in photographs, objects, and lived memories from his upbringing in Kerala, his works resist closure, instead embracing contradiction and ambiguity. They invite viewers to enter an open field of interpretation, where meaning is fluid and unfinished—much like the stories that echo long after childhood, haunting us precisely because they remain incomplete.
Vivek V C (b. 1996) is a visual artist whose work moves fluidly across mediums, with a particular emphasis on charcoal and watercolor. Born in Kannur (Kerala), Vivek is currently based in Vadodara. Through these mediums, he develops an evocative visual language that negotiates the tension between memory, history, and imagination. His imagery often emerges from childhood recollections, grandmother’s tales, local ghost stories, as well as mythology and art history, all of which he reworks into layered and fragmented compositions. Photographs and observed details further enter his process, resulting in works that oscillate between the familiar and the uncanny. A recurring concern in Vivek’s practice is the paradoxical condition of the contemporary moment, where an overload of information, images, and experiences creates both order and chaos. His works embrace this ambiguity, allowing disconnected elements to coexist and inviting viewers into spaces where gaps, silences, and contradictions become central to meaning-making.
Vivek received his BFA (2019) and MFA (2023) in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. His practice has been presented in exhibitions including Residue of Time (in an implausible space), Berth ICCI, Kochi (2024); Kala Karma, Lalit Kala Akademi Regional Centre, Chennai (2024); Cochin Art Fair, Durbar Hall, Kochi (2023); and the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi State Exhibitions (2021–23). He is the recipient of the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi Special Mention Award (2020–21), the Akademi’s student scholarship (2022–23), and a research grant (2023). His residencies include Dotwalk Ajitara Art Residency, Delhi (2025), Space Studio, Baroda (2024), and the Lalit Kala Akademi Residency, Chennai (2024). Vivek’s works are in the collections of the Alembic Group, Baroda, and the Takshila Art Collection.
