Charanjeet Singh's work draws on the architectural memory of India's step wells and the visual language of Mughal miniature painting, fusing the two into a single narrative register. His practice is less about depicting these forms than channelling their history—treating step wells as sites of resilience and spiritual continuity, and using that inherited wisdom to advocate for water conservation and sustainable stewardship today.

Charanjeet Singh (b. 1989) is a contemporary artist based in Surat whose creations echo the whispers of history and advocate for water conservation. Drawing inspiration from the ancient step wells of India and the rich tradition of Mughal miniature paintings, Singh seamlessly weaves together these influences to convey a crucial message about the preservation of water and the timeless lessons of history. Fascinated by the architectural marvels of step wells, Singh becomes a storyteller, narrating tales of resilience and spiritual connection resonating to the lived and collective memory of architecture and history. He intertwines the soul of step wells with the intricate beauty of Mughal miniatures, creating a visual narrative that transcends temporal boundaries. Through his practice, Singh underscores the urgent need for water conservation, utilizing the historical wisdom encapsulated in these structures to advocate for sustainable water management practices. His creations serve as a powerful call to action, prompting viewers to reflect on the interplay of history, art, and the vital element that sustains life – water.
