Here, a figure lies sprawled across a bed, legs propped carelessly on a nearby chair, absorbed in the glow of a mobile phone. Rahul captures this suspended moment of hostel idleness, where time slips between distraction and inertia. While playful at first glance, the work also reveals the detachment of an existence marked by solitude, routine, and the need to escape into virtual worlds. The faceless body, rendered with Rahul’s textured sensibility, becomes a vessel of shared experience, resonating with the languor and withdrawal that mark contemporary student life.

Drawing inspiration from everyday encounters, travel, memories, and the layered complexity of human emotions, G Rahul’s (b. 1997) practice is grounded in printmaking yet constantly expands its possibilities. His works often feature faceless figures and distorted forms accompanied by symbolic belongings — slippers, boxes, or found wooden objects — that act as stand-ins for human presence and memory. Working from a diary of preparatory sketches, and incorporating fragments from photographs, newspapers, and magazines, Rahul weaves together personal philosophies and stories into richly textured compositions. By engaging both traditional and experimental printmaking techniques, he seeks to evoke nostalgia, wonder, and introspection in his viewers. Through his work, G Rahul positions printmaking as a vital medium of contemporary reflection, one that captures fleeting moments of lived experience and transforms them into resonant, symbolic narratives.

Rahul received his Master’s degree in Visual Arts (Graphic Arts) from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2023, following a Bachelor’s degree in Printmaking from the College of Art, New Delhi (2021). His formative years included participation in the National Art Camp of Printmaking under Jagdeesh Tammineni in Kerala (2019) and a lithography workshop with Devraj Dakoji (2023), which shaped his technical and conceptual engagement with the medium. In recent years, his work has been widely exhibited in India and internationally, including Lineage as Language (Rukshaan Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2025), In the Small Infinite (Method Kala Ghoda, Mumbai, 2025), Shapeshifters and Storytellers (Archer Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, 2025), Printed Voices from India (SOS Art, Cincinnati, USA, 2024), and the 132nd Annual Art Exhibition at the Bombay Art Society (2024). His earlier participations include Yuva Sambhava Prints at the Raza Foundation (2023), the 96th All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition (2023), and Abir Space (Ahmedabad, 2021). Rahul’s contributions have been recognised with the 96th AAIFACS Award in Printmaking (2023), the Kala Chaupal Trust LADN Emerging Printmaker Grant (2023), and the Po10tial Seedhi Scholarship (2023). Alongside his exhibitions, he has conducted printmaking workshops in Mumbai and Gujarat, extending his practice to collaborative and community contexts.
