Bikash Chandra Senapati’s artistic practice reflects a continuous negotiation between nature, memory, and the evolving textures of urban life. Born in rural Odisha and now based in Vadodara, Senapati’s journey across diverse geographies, from the quiet rhythms of the countryside to the dense, shifting pace of cities like Delhi, has profoundly shaped his visual language. Trained in painting and later in multidisciplinary imagemaking, he brings together drawing, monotype, and experimental processes to explore the coexistence and friction between the natural and the constructed. For Senapati, drawing is not merely a tool of depiction but an act of meditation—a means of engaging deeply with thought, emotion, and environment. His lines emerge intuitively, often carrying the organic fluidity of rivers, foliage, and terrain, yet intersecting with the angular geometries of urban grids. This interplay between the spontaneous and the structured mirrors his lived experience of transition, displacement, and adaptation. Each work becomes a dialogue between past and present, evoking both the serenity of rural landscapes and the sensory intensity of modern cities. By reinterpreting traditional techniques through a contemporary lens, Senapati creates layered narratives that question how human beings inhabit and alter their surroundings. His art invites reflection on the fragile balance between nature and development, simplicity and complexity, memory and transformation—offering viewers a space to pause, observe, and rediscover the quiet harmonies that persist amid change.

Born in Odisha, Bikash Chandra Senapati’s practice is deeply shaped by his transition from the calm, agrarian rhythms of rural life to the complex realities of urban existence. This duality—the harmony of nature and the chaos of cities—forms the foundation of his artistic inquiry. His work meditates on the coexistence and conflict between these environments, exploring how urbanization transforms our relationship with the natural world while redefining our sense of belonging and self.

At the heart of Senapati’s practice lies drawing—an intuitive, meditative act that allows him to translate emotion and memory into form. His lines oscillate between the fluidity of organic landscapes and the rigidity of urban geometries, creating a visual language that is both personal and reflective. Working across mediums, he continually pushes the expressive potential of mark-making, viewing each work as an evolving conversation between his past and present. In recent explorations, Senapati focuses on the interplay between material, form, and space, seeking new ways to represent the shifting boundaries between nature and the built environment. Through his art, he invites viewers to pause and reconsider their relationship with the spaces they inhabit—whether natural or constructed—and the fragile equilibrium that sustains them.

Senapati completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore (2009–2013) and his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh (2017–2019). His recent exhibitions include Baroda Unbound: City as Studio (Exhibit320, Delhi, 2025), Memories (The Art Route Gallery, Gurugram, 2024), Printed Voices of India (Kennedy Heights Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, 2024), and Editions (Nine Fish Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2023). His solo exhibition Niroopan was held at Triveni Gallery (Delhi, 2021). Senapati has been recognised with the ABIR First Take Award (2022), the State Award in Printmaking from Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi (2021), the KHOJ Support Grant (2020), and the J. D. Godhalekar Award (2020).
